Flow meter problems can lead to inaccurate process control, product quality issues, and financial losses. This guide covers common flow meter problems and solutions.

I. Common Flow Meter Problems

Zero Drift: The meter shows flow when no flow exists. Check for electrical noise or ground loops. Verify the pipe is actually full. For electromagnetic meters, check electrode cleanliness and grounding. For Coriolis meters, check for mechanical stress on the flow tubes.

Inaccurate Readings: Verify straight pipe requirements are met. Check for two-phase flow (gas in liquid or vice versa). Inspect the meter interior for deposits, scaling, or erosion. Verify the meter is configured for the correct pipe size and fluid properties.

Unstable or Noisy Readings: Check for process pulsations or hydraulic noise. Verify adequate back-pressure to prevent cavitation. Check for electrical interference from VFDs or other equipment. Inspect cable shielding and grounding.

No Output: Check power supply and fuses. Verify wiring connections. Test the sensor and transmitter separately if possible.

II. Calibration Methods

  • Master Meter Comparison: Install a calibrated reference meter in series and compare readings at multiple flow rates
  • Prover Calibration: Use a pipe prover or compact prover for high-accuracy verification, typically for custody transfer applications
  • Gravimetric Method: Collect and weigh the fluid over a timed interval. Most accurate for liquid flow calibration
  • Dry Calibration: For some meter types, verify electronics and sensor integrity without flowing fluid

III. Preventive Measures

  • Install strainers or filters upstream to protect the meter from debris
  • Use flow straighteners when straight pipe requirements cannot be met
  • Monitor process conditions (temperature, pressure, viscosity) that affect meter performance
  • Implement a regular verification schedule based on application criticality
