Force measurement systems are used in material testing, weighing, process control, and structural monitoring applications. Proper operation ensures accurate force readings and system reliability.

I. Types of Force Measurement

  • Load Cells: Convert mechanical force into electrical signals. Common types include strain gauge, hydraulic, and pneumatic load cells.
  • Force Transducers: Measure tension or compression forces in manufacturing and testing applications.
  • Dynamometers: Measure force, torque, or power. Used in engine testing, material testing, and crane load monitoring.

II. Installation

  1. Mount load cells on a rigid, flat surface to prevent bending or twisting that can cause measurement errors
  2. Ensure force is applied along the primary measurement axis. Off-axis loading introduces errors.
  3. Use proper mounting hardware including hardened washers and proper torque on mounting bolts
  4. Protect load cells from environmental factors including moisture, dust, and temperature extremes

III. Calibration

  1. Use calibrated reference weights or a force calibration machine traceable to national standards
  2. Apply force in increasing and decreasing steps across the measurement range
  3. Calculate linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability errors
  4. Adjust the instrument calibration if errors exceed specifications

IV. Maintenance

  • Inspect load cells for physical damage, corrosion, or cable damage monthly
  • Verify zero balance and calibration quarterly
  • Clean load cell mounting surfaces and check for debris that may cause binding
  • Replace damaged or corroded load cells immediately
