Industrial generators provide critical backup and primary power. Safe operation requires strict adherence to established procedures to prevent accidents, equipment damage, and ensure reliable power supply.

I. Pre-Start Inspection

  1. Wiring Check: Before starting, verify all wiring connections are correct and secure. Check that the grounding connection is solid and meets specifications.
  2. Mechanical Inspection: Check the connection between the engine and generator transmission components. Verify that output line conductors have good insulation.
  3. Instrument Check: Verify all gauges, indicators, and monitoring instruments are functional and displaying correctly.
  4. Fuel and Oil: Check fuel level, engine oil level, and coolant level. Top up as needed before starting.
  5. Surrounding Area: Ensure the area around the generator is clear of flammable materials and debris. Verify adequate ventilation.

II. Startup Procedures

  1. Disconnect Load: Ensure the main circuit breaker is in the OFF position before starting the generator. Never start under load.
  2. Engine Start: Start the engine following manufacturer procedures. Allow the engine to warm up and stabilize at rated speed.
  3. Parameter Check: Monitor voltage, frequency, and oil pressure during warmup. Verify all readings are within normal ranges.
  4. Load Connection: Once the generator is stable, close the main circuit breaker to connect the load. Monitor for abnormal conditions.
  5. Parallel Operation: If paralleling with grid or other generators, follow synchronization procedures precisely. Incorrect synchronization can cause severe damage.

III. During Operation

  1. Continuous Monitoring: Monitor voltage, current, frequency, temperature, and oil pressure at regular intervals. Record readings in the operation log.
  2. Load Management: Do not exceed the rated capacity of the generator. Maintain balanced loading across phases for three-phase generators.
  3. Abnormal Conditions: If abnormal noise, vibration, overheating, or fluctuation is detected, shut down immediately and investigate.
  4. Refueling: Never refuel while the generator is running. Allow the engine to cool before refueling.

IV. Shutdown Procedures

  1. Disconnect the load by opening the main circuit breaker
  2. Allow the generator to run unloaded for 3-5 minutes to cool down
  3. Stop the engine following manufacturer procedures
  4. Turn off the fuel supply valve
  5. Record final readings and any observations in the operation log
