Industrial Recorder and Data Logger Operating Guide

Industrial recorders and data loggers provide permanent records of process parameters for quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and troubleshooting.

I. Types

  • Strip Chart Recorders: Continuous pen recording on moving paper. Simple, reliable, and provide immediate visual trends.
  • Circular Chart Recorders: Record on rotating circular charts. Common for applications requiring daily or weekly record changes.
  • Paperless Recorders: Electronic data storage with digital display. Higher data density, easier data retrieval, and no consumables.
  • Data Loggers: Compact, battery-powered devices for standalone data collection. Ideal for remote or temporary monitoring.

II. Configuration

  1. Set the correct input type for each channel: thermocouple, RTD, voltage, or current input
  2. Configure the chart speed appropriate for the process dynamics. Faster speeds for batch processes, slower for continuous monitoring.
  3. Set the recording range for each channel. Ensure the expected process values are within the recording range.
  4. Configure alarm setpoints and relay outputs if the recorder includes alarm functions.

III. Maintenance

  • Chart Recorders: Replace charts and pens before they run out. Clean the pen mechanism and check for ink flow.
  • Paperless Recorders: Periodically backup stored data. Check available memory and archive or purge old data as needed.
  • All Types: Verify calibration against a reference standard quarterly. Clean the exterior and check connections.
