Level gauges are subject to harsh process conditions that can cause deterioration and failure. Proper maintenance and safety practices are essential.

I. Safety Considerations

  1. Always isolate and depressurize the gauge before performing any maintenance
  2. Allow the gauge to cool to ambient temperature before handling
  3. Wear appropriate PPE including chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and face shield
  4. Use only manufacturer-approved replacement parts, especially for glass and gaskets
  5. Never exceed the rated pressure and temperature limits of the gauge

II. Common Problems

Cloudy or Stained Glass: Chemical attack from process fluid. Replace glass and verify material compatibility. Install protective mica shields if applicable.

Leaking Gaskets: Tighten bolts evenly in a cross-pattern to the specified torque. If leaking persists, replace gaskets. Check for warped gauge body surfaces.

Stuck Magnetic Flags: Clean the indicator assembly. Check for debris between the float and chamber wall. Verify that the float has not been crushed by excessive pressure.

Level Discrepancy: Compare with independent level measurement. Check for plugged process connections. Verify that isolation valves are fully open.

III. Preventive Maintenance
