Daily Cleaning and Sanitation

After each production shift, thoroughly clean the extruder screw, barrel, and die assembly. Disassemble removable components and clean with appropriate food-grade cleaning solutions. Pay special attention to die orifices - use soft brushes or compressed air, never metal tools that could damage precision openings.

Clean the cutting mechanism and verify blade sharpness. Dull blades create ragged cuts and inconsistent product lengths. Wipe down all external surfaces and the control panel. Ensure all cleaned components are completely dry before reassembly to prevent rust formation.

Lubrication Schedule

Apply food-grade lubricant to main bearings daily. Check gearbox oil level weekly and top up as needed. Complete gearbox oil change every three months or 500 operating hours, whichever comes first. Lubricate the cutting mechanism drive components after each cleaning.

Component Inspection

Screw Inspection: Check screw flight surfaces for wear, scoring, or damage monthly. Measure flight-to-barrel clearance. Excessive clearance reduces extrusion efficiency and product consistency.

Barrel Inspection: Examine barrel internal surface for wear patterns or scoring. Grooved barrel sections require particular attention as wear affects feed efficiency.

Die Inspection: Check die plate for cracks or deformation. Inspect individual die orifices for uniform wear. Replace dies showing uneven wear patterns.

Drive System: Check belt tension and condition monthly. Inspect coupling elements between motor and gearbox. Verify motor mounts are secure.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Uneven extrusion: Check for die blockage, inconsistent dough moisture, or screw wear.

Product surface roughness: Verify die surface condition and barrel temperature settings.

Motor overload: Check feed rate, dough consistency, and barrel temperature. Inspect for mechanical binding.

Excessive noise: Inspect bearings, check screw-to-barrel alignment, verify gearbox condition.

Safety Requirements

Always disconnect power before maintenance. Allow barrel to cool before disassembly. Use proper lifting equipment for heavy components. Follow lockout/tagout procedures. Never reach into the feed opening while the machine is running, even at low speed.
