Understanding 3D Printing Technology: Principles and Processes
An explanation of 3D printing technology and its processes.
Three-dimensional printing, also known as additive manufacturing, creates physical objects by building them layer by layer from a digital model. Unlike traditional methods that remove material, 3D printing adds material only where needed. The workflow begins with a CAD model that slicing software divides into thin cross-sections. The printer then deposits or solidifies material one layer at a time. Fused deposition modeling heats thermoplastic filament and extrudes it through a nozzle. Stereolithography uses ultraviolet laser to cure liquid resin. Selective laser sintering fuses powdered materials. Post-processing steps include removing supports, sanding, and chemical smoothing.
