Coordinate Measuring Machine Operation Guide
Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) provide three-dimensional measurement of complex parts with high accuracy. They are essential tools in modern manufacturing quality control.
I. Types
- Bridge CMM: Most common configuration. Good accuracy for medium-sized parts.
- Gantry CMM: For large, heavy parts. The measuring volume can be very large.
- Cantilever CMM: Open access from three sides. Good for smaller parts and shop floor use.
- Portable Measuring Arms: Articulated arm with rotary encoders. Flexible but less accurate than fixed CMMs.
II. Operating Procedures
- Warmup: Allow the CMM and part to stabilize at the measurement temperature. Temperature variations are the largest source of CMM measurement error.
- Probe Configuration: Select and calibrate the probe system. Verify probe tip diameter and orientation.
- Part Alignment: Establish the part coordinate system by measuring reference features. This aligns the measurement data with the part design.
- Measurement: Execute the measurement program or take measurements manually. Monitor for collisions or probe errors.
III. Maintenance
- Daily: Clean the granite table and guideways. Verify probe calibration on a reference sphere.
- Weekly: Clean air bearings and filters. Check air supply quality (dryness, oil content).
- Monthly: Verify machine accuracy using a calibrated ball bar or step gauge.
- Annually: Professional calibration and certification. Mechanical inspection of guideways and drives.
